About a Boy
Go on a Journey

Please come with us on a journey with a little boy named Maxje, "Dicky Kramer", or as we know home today as Max Cardozo, who was a boy living in Holland during World War II. Famine, deportation, and the eventual death of many of those he loved most in this world. These stories also reflect on times of great laughter and the greatest joy between himself, his parents, and some of his protector's families. That is the story of a child living underground in a time of hiding because of being a Jew during the Holocaust deemed necessary by the Nazi machine in Germany. While many Jews did not survive this time of great sorrow, Max Cardozo managed to stay alive with the help of his Dutch protectors, which came at a price for all those involved ...  and this was my story Dickey Kramer 1945 liberation day May 1945.

Overview

Written about the memories of a boy who lived in hiding during Nazi occupation in Holland, A Child Underground is the true account of a memoir written from the perspective of a real man who remembers. This boy experiences heartbreak, love, and grows up during one of the most turbulent and unpredictable times in world history. The boy is a survivor, a survivor of all things evil, unjust, and wrong with political power. Born January 11, 1937, to his parents Anna & Maurits Cardozo in Amsterdam, Max has had a colorful life that most of us couldn't even imagine. First leaving Holland for the United States Army at the age of 19, Max I worked for Sterns in New York, and later moved to Kansas City in 1964 to work for RH Macy’s. Being very much an entrepreneur and after working for Gateway Sporting Good, Max started Cardozo Sporting Goods Manufacturers, and later MASH International. His success in the sports world eventually landed him the gig of Sports Commissioner 1973, a role he held for seven years. Max has been married to his wife Lenore for 60 years and had three boys, Elliot, Alan, and Ronald. A Child Underground covers his life from the time of his infancy just days before WWII broke out in Amsterdam, to his retirement in Cost Rica many years later.

Max Cardozo

Max Cardozo was born in Holland just prior to the outbreak of WWII. After enduring the trauma and heartbreak that was Wold War II, and after spending the rest of his boyhood, Max decided to leave the Netherlands by first formally learning the clothing trade by attending schools in the United Kingdom, at which point Mr. Cardozo decided to enlist into the United States Army. After taking what he could from the military, and now a citizen, Max decided to try his business in the global clothing markets, and to great success. Max wrote A Chid Underground, Memories of a Boy who Lived in Hiding During the Nazi Occupation of Holland, back in 2009 as a way to understand the host of nightmares that had been plaguing him since he was a child. When told by a medical friend of the facility, that his glass was "full," he decided to retire from his busy and successful business career, write his stories, and try and warn future generations of the dangers that are still present today.
